Many of the brightest and best publishers have beautiful digital editions of their magazines, but with one fatal flaw: they are exclusive to iPads.

We see this mistake being made time and time again, both with long-established editions, and fresher publications. Excuses from editorial teams are wide-ranging, but all follow a similar theme: that cross-platform publishing is too difficult and simply isn't in demand.

Replica editions are a crime against humanity

At a tech talk on digital editions at the UK Publishers Association (PPA) in London last week one of the panelists was typically direct. ‘We think replica editions are a crime against humanity,” said Jon Marks, co-founder of HTML app builders Pugpig.

As their business is predicated on turning magazines into HTML apps, and they have no place for replicas in that process, he is not unbiased. But agreeing with him were two replica companies: Zinio and Pixelmags.

Review: The New British magazine

The New British is a hard-hitting documentary magazine which 'celebrates culture in all of its modern aspects'. Here, we take a look at how Issue Zero has fared in its first steps into the digital world.

Initially released as a limited edition print magazine over two years ago, it has since gathered a devoted following to its digital-only native app edition, and is soon to release a second issue titled Legacy.

HTML apps are the way forward

Last week we hosted a tech talk at the Publishers Association (PPA) in London on the subject of "HTML apps, the way forward". I originally had a question mark in the title, but was told by the other participants Michael Kowalski, Founder of Contentment, the developer behind the Padify platform and Clare Evans, a Front End Developer at Kaldor who produce the PugPig platform to take it out. There is no question that HTML apps ARE the way forward, it seems.
